Do you want to know the best spots to see the cherry blossoms in Edinburgh? Look no further. In fact, why not have a pink themed day in the city. Pink cafes, pink cocktails, and pink avocado toast? Why not…..
Early Morning Wander: The Meadows
The phrases ‘pretty in pink’ could have been written for Edinburgh in spring. For a few weeks every year in mid April to early May, pink cherry blossoms burst into life across the city making for stunning photos against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s old architecture. The exact dates for the cherry blossoms vary year to year depending on the fickle spring weather!
Start your perfect pink themed day at Pinch of Salt, a converted police box at Tollcross where Lauriston Place meets Brougham Street (open Monday to Friday from early morning). Grab a hot beverage in a trendy pink takeaway cup then head along Brougham Place towards The Meadows. Here you can enjoy an adylic walk, coffee in hand, through the avenues of cherry blossoms. You will literally be walking through long tunnels of pink. It is simply stunning. Take a seat on one of the benches and contemplate what the cherry blossoms teach us about life.
Cherry blossoms teach us that even the shortest moments can bring us immense joy
There are 3 main blossom avenues which you can zig zag up and down – Jawbone Walk, Coronation Walk and Boys Brigade Walk. The quietest and most photogenic is Coronation Walk.
A Pink Brunch: Laila
From here, continue your perfect pink themed day on Edinburgh’s picturesque Cockburn Street. Laila is a dreamy, pink brunch restaurant which is a perfect place to stop for a late morning bite to eat. The menu has a middle eastern influence and you will struggle to choose which of the drool-worthy brunch items to order. In the interests of pinkness, however, I would recommend rose buttermilk pancakes (complete with pink candy floss) if you fancy something sweet or the pink avocado toast if you fancy something savoury. Yum!
Time for another wander
After brunch, and you will be greeted with a picture perfect cherry blossom tree at the corner of Market Street and Waverley Bridge. It contrasts nicely with a post-box-red coffee hut and makes for a great photo op.
Next head into Princes Street Gardens and …. wow! The sight of the blossoms with the Castle in the background is instagram heaven.
Take your time and take in the fleeting beauty of the trees.
The short bloom time of cherry blossoms teaches us to enjoy the present moment and understand that everything is temporary.
There are a couple of cherry blossoms within the gardens but the best photo opportunities are from Princes Street looking down into the gardens. From here the cherry blossoms along the boundary fence of the gardens frame the Castle nicely.
Dinner Under the Blossoms: Tattu
For the absolutely perfect end to this perfect pink themed day in Edinburgh, head to the restaurant who have literally brought the cherry blossoms inside. Tattu on West Register Street is a stylish vision in pink with artificial cherry blossoms forming a canopy for the tables. The chinese inspired food is consistently delicious with a cocktail menu to match. During cherry blossoms they have a special cocktail called the Cherry Blossom Negroni – it would be rude not to!
Evening Wander : St Andrews Square
As the evenings are now getting longer, you can take one last (short) walk after dinner to St Andrew’s Square where the pink of a few cherry blossoms pop against your evening photos of the Melville Monument.
